Debbie’s Story: Regaining Mobility and Independence Through the Executive Momentum Program

My name is Debbie, and showing dogs has been an important part of my life for years. I loved traveling to shows and being involved in the ring, but as my knee pain grew worse, I began stepping back from the activities I enjoyed. Eventually, even walking through the grocery store, using the stairs, or getting out of a chair became difficult. I wanted to feel more comfortable moving through my day without depending so much on support. Before making a decision about knee replacement, I came to SmartLife Medicine to explore my options and find a plan to help me regain strength and independence.

Why I Chose SmartLife Medicine

My knee problems started years ago. Around age 40, I tore my meniscus and had arthroscopic surgery, and more recent imaging showed another meniscus tear along with an ACL tear. After I injured the knee again, the pain became much worse, and I reached a point where I could barely bend it or get up from a chair comfortably. I had also lost strength after spending more time at home during COVID. As moving became harder, I did less, and over time I noticed how much my activity had changed. At dog shows, my daughter was running around the ring while I helped from the sidelines. My daughter had been through regenerative treatments after an injury and worked her way back to triathlons, hockey, and an active life. Watching her progress made me want to learn more, and she encouraged me to meet Dr. Vogt. I knew our situations were different, but I wanted to understand whether another approach made sense for me before pursuing knee replacement.

A Team Invested in My Success

From the beginning, I appreciated how Dr. Vogt took the time to understand what I was struggling with. We reviewed my MRI and X-rays, discussed the knee injury, and talked about the strength and function I had lost along the way. He explained what he thought we should address and how the different parts of my care would work together. I joined the Executive Momentum program, which gave us a framework for addressing those needs through an ongoing, coordinated plan. My A2M/PRP injections were one part of my treatment, alongside work focused on rebuilding strength and improving how I moved. For me, it made sense to address the injury and the weakness contributing to my everyday difficulties. I was nervous about the injections because I am afraid of needles, but both treatment experiences were easier than I had expected. The blood draws went smoothly, and Dr. Vogt talked me through what he was doing, which helped me feel more comfortable. The communication throughout the office has also stood out. If I mention something to one person, Dr. Vogt often already knows about it when I see him. I feel supported by a team who understands my care and follows my progress.

Results That Changed My Life

The most meaningful improvements have been in the everyday activities I had started to lose. At one point, walking through a grocery store was too painful, so I ordered groceries for delivery. At home, I relied on a knee brace and a rollator, a wheeled mobility aid, to get around. Today, I am walking around my house without either one. Moving through my day feels easier, and relying less on those supports has helped me regain some independence. I am still working toward better strength and mobility, and I would not describe myself as fully recovered. But when I compare where I am now with where I was six months ago, I see progress in the things I do every day.

A Partner for Health & Wellness

What I value about the Executive Momentum program is having ongoing care organized around my goals. My knee pain brought me to SmartLife Medicine, but rebuilding strength became an important part of helping me function better. The program provides continuity in my care, while individual treatments serve different purposes within the plan. We continue working on strength and movement while Dr. Vogt follows how my knee is doing. Some weeks have involved more visits than others, and now I am generally in the office about once a week. Having a plan and regular follow-up helps me stay involved in my progress. I want to move more comfortably, stay independent, and keep participating in the activities I enjoy, and those goals remain part of the conversation.

My Message to Others

If you are nervous about exploring regenerative medicine, I understand because I felt the same way. I remembered recovering from my earlier knee surgery, and before considering a knee replacement, I wanted to learn whether there was another reasonable option for my situation. My advice is to ask questions and take the time to understand the recommendations. Dr. Vogt was easy to talk to and explained what he saw, what he wanted to work on, and what we were trying to accomplish. Understanding the plan helped me feel more comfortable moving forward.

Moving Forward

Showing dogs, staying active, and managing my own daily routine are still important to me. I have more work ahead, but walking around my home without any assistance reminds me how far I have come. I came to SmartLife Medicine looking for an option before knee replacement, and through the Executive Momentum program, I found ongoing support for my knee, my strength, and my day-to-day function. Regaining some of my independence has meant the most to me, and it gives me a reason to keep working toward the things I still want to do.
