Personalized Stem Cells
Personalized Stem Cells (PSC) specializes in the collection, processing, and long-term banking of a patient’s own adipose-derived stem cells. Through our relationship with PSC, SmartLife Medicine helps patients coordinate preserving their cells today for potential future physician-directed use.
Watch Dr. Bob Harman and Dr. Chris Rogers, part of the PSC leadership team, discuss the science, experience, and approach behind Personalized Stem Cells.

Stem Cell Therapy FAQ’s
What makes Personalized Stem Cell approach different than other stem cell therapies?
Personalized stem cell therapy uses your own cells, known as autologous cells, rather than cells obtained from a donor. This avoids introducing foreign DNA and reduces concerns related to immune incompatibility associated with donor cells.
Where do my stem cells come from?
Personalized Stem Cells uses stem cells derived from your own adipose, or fat, tissue. A small amount of adipose tissue is collected through a minimally invasive procedure, typically performed under local anesthesia. Common collection areas include the abdomen, flanks, hips, or thighs.
Why does Personalized Stem Cells use adipose tissue?
Adipose tissue contains a high concentration of regenerative cells and provides an accessible source of mesenchymal-like stem cells. Collection is also less invasive than harvesting cells from bone marrow.
What happens to my cells after they are collected?
Your adipose tissue is sent to Personalized Stem Cells in San Diego, California, where it is processed in state-of-the-art U.S.-based facilities. Depending on your program, cells are isolated, expanded, quality tested, and cryopreserved for future physician-directed use. For culture-expanded cells, PSC describes the process from collection to banking as taking approximately 60 days.
How are my stem cells tested for safety and quality?
PSC states that its laboratory follows FDA-aligned standards and tests each batch for sterility and purity. Its patient guidance also emphasizes quality-control testing, cell characterization, proper cryogenic storage, and documented laboratory procedures as important safeguards.
Is personalized stem cell therapy FDA approved?
No. Personalized Stem Cell therapies remain investigational and are being studied through FDA clinical trials. Treatment access depends on the specific condition, physician recommendation, and eligibility for an appropriate clinical trial, expanded-access program, or other lawful treatment pathway.
How are personalized stem cells used for orthopedic care?
Dr. Vogt applies the same diagnosis-first approach used with advanced PRP therapy. His expertise in sports medicine and regenerative orthopedics guides whether stem cell therapy is appropriate, where to target treatment, and how it fits into your overall orthopedic care plan.
Are my cells available for future treatments?
Yes. PSC offers cryogenic banking designed to preserve a master supply of your cells for future physician-directed use. This approach allows cells collected today to remain available if another treatment is appropriate later.
What are the risks and recovery associated with the process?
Every medical procedure involves risk. PSC reports that adipose-tissue collection commonly involves temporary bruising, swelling, or mild discomfort at the collection site. Treatment-related risks depend on the procedure and injection location. Individual outcomes also vary, and improvement is not guaranteed.
How do I know if personalized stem cell therapy is right for me?
The process starts with a comprehensive medical evaluation with Dr. Matthew Vogt. He will review your diagnosis, overall health, previous treatments, imaging findings, activity level, and goals to determine whether personalized stem cell therapy fits your needs and which treatment pathway offers the strongest potential benefit.
What costs should I expect for personalized stem cell therapy?
Personalized stem cell therapy involves separate services provided by SmartLife Medicine and Personalized Stem Cells (PSC). As a result, each organization will provide separate pricing and payment information based on the services involved in your care. Our team will help explain the process and what to expect before you move forward.
